Zookeeper – Change Is Good

by Yo Snyder

Philippians 1:6 “…being confident of this, that he who
began a good work in you will
carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” In the new movie
Zookeeper, the character played by Kevin James eventually realizes that it’s
not worth it for him to get the girl of his dreams if it means becoming someone
he doesn’t like, someone other than who he really is. He learns that he need to
be content with who he is and not worry about changing to please others; a
messages that we’ve heard dozens of other times in dozens of other movies.
However, I don’t think that message is entirely accurate. I think we do need to change; but it needs to be
the right kind of change. It’s been
well said that God loves us just the way we are, but he loves us too much to
leave us the way we are. Jesus Christ died on a cross and rose from the dead to
save us from our sin, but our journey as Christians only begins there. As we
develop our relationship with God and surrender more and more to the Holy
Spirit, we should change. We should change to become more like Christ. We
should leave more of our sin nature behind as more of the Christ nature
manifests itself in our daily life. Change guided and directed by the Holy
Spirit is good news, and we should be excited to let it happen. While it’s true
we shouldn’t change just to please other people, we should let God change us, because the truth is when we allow him to
do that, we won’t become someone different, rather we’ll discover who we were
really meant to be.
