X-Men: First Class – Fighting To Save Our Enemies

by Yo Snyder

Mark 13:13 “Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end
will be saved.” They’re despised, hated and feared. They are ostracized and
persecuted. In spite of all of that, in spite of the fact they may be small in
number, they are out to change the world. I’m talking, of course, about the
X-Men…or Christians, either one really fits that description. X-Men: First
Class opens today and once again mutants are out to save a hostile humanity who
neither accepts them nor wants them to even exist. I’ve always felt that the
X-Men made a great analogy for us as Christians. They’re a small band of
outsiders who despite the ire, ill-will and at times outward hatred directed at
them always work to save the very people who despise them. They refuse to
return evil for evil, but rather they want to do good, they want to help.
There’s been an outpouring of hostile feelings towards Christianity of late,
but there always has been, and there are a few ways we can respond. We can fire
right back with stinging comments and hostile attacks, we can cringe in fear
and try to hide in our Christian bubbles, or we can be like the X-Men, and be
the heroes God has called us to be by sharing the good news, by showing love
and compassion, and by returning good for evil. In short, we can respond the
exact same way Jesus did to the very world that wanted to put him to death.
