What Makes Superman…Superman? – And What Makes Us Who We Are?
1 Samuel 16:7 “But the Lord said to Samuel; ‘Do not consider
his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look
at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord
looks at the heart.'” Recently, Warner Brothers Pictures released the
first image from the upcoming Superman movie, The Man of Steel. In it we get
our first glimpse of Superman’s new suit, and of course the moment that hit the
web, the fan-boy debate over Superman’s look began. Is the “S” shield too big
or too small? Is his cape too large? Did they get the boots and the belt right?
Are the colors too muted or too bright? Does the suit look better than the one
in Superman Returns and on and on. Now, as a fan, I understand that it’s
important to get the look right, but especially with someone like Superman, I
think it’s his character that’s more important. Will he still be noble? Will he
still be strong and determined? Will he still have compassion? Will he still
believe in truth, justice and all the rest of that stuff? These are the things
that make Superman Superman; not just his outfit. And so it is with us. You
know we can look any way we want — either as conservative Christians or hip,
relevant Christians — but if the character of Christ isn’t at the core of who
we are, we’re just an empty shell at best and hypocritical one at worst. Let’s
not just look the part, let’s be from the inside out authentic disciples of
Christ. Let’s allow his character, not the way we look, define who we are.
Because when we do, people won’t help but notice how the good news of the
gospel is changing our lives.
