Thor – The Almighty Hero

by Yo Snyder

Job 27:11 “I will teach you about the power of God; the
ways of the Almighty I will not
conceal.” Thor, the god of thunder, comes storming into theaters today (now
that was a clever bit of writing, did you see what I did there? No. Oh, well, never
mind then.) For those of you who aren’t familiar with this Marvel comic book
character, Thor is an immortal god who’s noble, powerful, heroic and wields a
magical hammer. Come to think of it, he sounds a lot like another God I
know…except for the hammer part. And come to think of it, many of the comic
book superheroes everyone loves today sound a lot like a God I know. For some
reason, we love to watch movies about god-like heroes, but when you start to
share the Biblical history of the actual God hero come to earth to save
humanity, they either get huffy or aggressively offended. Movies like Thor
simply illustrate that, whether we admit it or not, we all have the desire for
an almighty hero to come and save the day. Well the good news is an almighty
God has done just that on the cross, and is willing to continue to be our
personal hero each and every day because he resurrected and is still alive
today. So after you’re done enjoying Thor on the big screen, be sure to mention
to others how the idea of a heroic God isn’t just a movie fantasy; it can be a
personal reality.
