The Simpsons – I Need To Be More Like Ned

by Yo Snyder

1 Peter 2:12 “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing
wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” Most
people probably know Ned Flanders as the slightly dorky, very Christian
neighbor of Homer Simpson. Some of you probably know that a few years ago, Ned’s
wife Maude was killed in a tragic accident that, not surprisingly, was partly
the fault of Homer. Since that time, Ned has been a lonely single father, but
on the recent season premiere, he found happiness once again. What’s
interesting about this is that the fans wanted him to be happy. The writers of
the show left up to the fans to decide if Ned would find love again or if he
would remain a lonely widower. Well the fans voted for happiness, and it’s been
promised that what the fans have united no writer will rip asunder. I just find
it interesting that dorky, Christian Ned has such an affection and respect
among the fan base that they’d want him to be happy. It just goes to show that
living a genuine, honest, faithful Christian life can have more of an impact
than we might think. Your neighbors, co-workers and the people you go to school
with may treat you like a dorky Christian, but when you faithfully follow Jesus
no matter how you’re treated, you’re probably earning more respect and
admiration for the way you live than you realize; which certainly opens up more
opportunities to share the good news. As strange as it may sound, the recent
events on The Simpsons reminded once again that it wouldn’t be so bad if I was
a little more like Ned Flanders.
