Prometheus – If Aliens, Then No God?

by Yo Snyder

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and
the earth.” If there are aliens, then there can’t possibly be a God. This is a
fairly common sentiment, one that’s explored in the new movie Prometheus. This line of reasoning
suggests that if aliens were to be discovered, it would prove that humanity is
not a special creation, unique in the universe, and therefore there would no
longer be any need to believe in God. However, this reasoning is rather flawed
because the Bible clearly states that in the beginning God created the heavens
and the earth. I believe that would include everything in the heavens, and
besides, if there were aliens, they would have had to have been created somehow
as well, right? Most importantly, even if aliens were discovered, it wouldn’t
change our condition one whit. We would still have a sin problem, and that
problem would still require a Savior to redeem us. If anything, the discovery
of alien life would demonstrate even more acutely our great need for God. For
all we know, out of all of creation, we are the only ones to blow it and fall
into sin, which makes God’s great love for us and his efforts to save us out of
that sin very good news indeed.
