News of the week – Too Much Excitement

by Yo Snyder

News of the week

There’s a ton of really great and exciting news that’s come out
this week. Lets just dive right in!

EA’s Origin is doing
creepy things

EA’s Origin PC
download service is auto adding games purchased through Steam, without telling
their user, and it’s weird. They’ve clarified this a bit with a new FAQ, but I
can’t help but wonder how this happened in the first place. Since EA Games
launched Origin, they’ve pretty well
worked to snub the popular Valve service, Steam.

Jet Set Radio returns to
the future

Do you remember Jet Set
Radio
? I do, it was a blast! Now it’s coming to the gaming system or PC
near you.  Not only that, but Sega is holding a graffiti contest. The
winner will be able to have their custom tag in-game. All you artists, start
artist-ing, I guess.

Gotham by
Gaslight

Oh, what could have been! At one point a game called Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was in
production. Some videos of this have cropped up, and it certainly could have
been interesting. A Batman game set in the Victorian era? Intriguing, to say
the least! Too bad this is all we’ll ever have of this unique idea.

Pokemon

Do you like Pokemon?
Do you, you know, gotta catch them all? While I finish cringing from that
previous sentence, you Pokemaniacs can look forward to Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon
White 2
. It’s releasing for the DS, not the 3DS. This has caused some tension
with fans and Nintendo as well, as you can imagine.

Prometheus is or is not
an Alien prequel

The new Ridley Scott film Prometheus
is coming soon, and it’s either got an association to the classic Alien series, or not. No one is sure
yet! Ridley Scott started the project as a prequel, but has since stated that
it’s no longer the same universe. In a recent interview, he gave some
information on the link between the series. Believe me, it’s not that good of a
spoiler, but if you don’t like being spoiled, skip the following link. So why
mention it if it’s not that good? Because I’m really excited about the movie.

The new Benedict

I love Doctor Who, and
I love talking about it. Steven Moffat, who is the head honcho in charge of
current Who, also has a series called
Sherlock that is widely celebrated in
the land of BBC. It’s good too, just so you know, but that’s not what this post
is about. The unfortunately named but undeniably cool Benedict Cumberbatch, the
star of the Sherlock, is playing an
unknown villain in the new Star Trek
movie. He’s also rumored to be playing the villain character The Master in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special
which should air sometime in 2013. I still think he’d be a great stand in for
Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor, but that’s just the nerd in me coming out.

Star Wars comics

A new comic book series, Star
Wars: Dawn of the Jedi
, will focus on — you guessed it, the dawn of the
Jedi. This new series will take place at the start of the Star Wars universe we’ve come to know and love. The writers
mentioned it would be closer to Firefly
than Star Wars, to use a TV analogy.
Hyperspace travel will be minimal, and planets will be isolated. Pretty cool,
huh?

Watching Star Wars for
the first, or hundredth time?

A pretty amazing blog post about the viewing order of the Star Wars saga has been making the rounds. Basically, he’s
proposed an alternate order for watching the movies. At first, it seems a
little silly, but his reasoning is totally sound. If you want the short
version, just watch Episode IV, V, II, III, VI in that order. He postulates
that watching II and III between Empire
Strikes Back
and Return of the Jedi
promotes a better tension, acts as a great big flashback scene, keeps the
surprise that Darth Vader is Luke’s dad, and helps give context to both the
prequels and Return, actually enhancing their quality. He suggests skipping
Episode I until later on (If the viewer wants to see it at all). This is a
quality read. Be advised, there’s a couple random smatterings of language in
it, but nothing super harsh.

Doctor Jones swinging to a high definition TV near you

IGN is reporting that the Indiana Jones films are finally being
released in a new Blu-ray set, sometime this fall. That’s exciting news,
especially for those of us who want to creep out our families with high
definition bugs and snakes. There’s not much else known about the set at this
time, but The Guide will let you know when we know something new!

Assassin’s
Creed 3

It looks like the next Assassin’s
Creed
game will be set in the American Revolution timeframe, with a Native
American protagonist. It’s a pretty great setting idea, and I hope it works
out. Ubisoft has released full box art, and it’s rad.

Stan Lee in the next Spiderman
game!

Here’s some news to get all the comic book guys all excited.
Stan Lee, the man himself, will be making an appearance in The Amazing Spiderman. He let it slip that he will actually be a
playable character. If that’s not cool, I’m not sure what is.
