Green Lantern – How To Overcome Great Fear

by Yo Snyder

Deuteronomy 31:8 “The Lord himself goes before you and
will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Be
fearless. That’s the job description of a Green Lantern. When Hal Jordan is
recruited to join this intergalactic peace keeping force, he’s not entirely
sure if he meets that requirement. However, in the new movie Green Lantern, he
eventually realizes that fearlessness isn’t pretending to be without fear, but
rather learning how to overcome that fear. You know, we live in a scary world.
Strange things are happening, crazy events are taking place, and a glance at
the news makes it seem like evil is on the rise all around us. I’ll be honest
with you; there are plenty of times I’m afraid. I’m afraid for my children
living in such a dark, malicious world. I’m afraid I’m not doing enough as a
Christian to combat the darkness. I’m afraid of spiders. The good news is I can
overcome that fear. How? By remembering what my source of power is. It’s not a
green, glowing ring from a Cracker Jack box, it’s a living, personal,
all-powerful God. One of the most consistent themes throughout the Bible from
beginning to end is “do not be afraid.” Why? Because our God is with us. He
loves us, he cares for us, he’s watching out for us, and he’s always there to
help us. As Christians, we should be just as fearless as the Green Lantern Corp
because with God and his Holy Spirit living inside of us, we all have the
ability to overcome great fear.
