Captian America: The First Avenger – Even Cap Isn’t Good Enough For God

by Yo Snyder

Romans 3:12 “All have turned away, they have together
become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” Captain America is an all-around good guy.
However, in his latest big-screen adventure, we learn that the special serum
that made him into America’s super-soldier not only boosted his physical
qualities, but his character qualities as well. In essence, the serum takes all
that’s good in him and makes it even better, just has it took all that was evil
in Red Skull and made it worse. So, Captain America, all-around good guy,
becomes a super good guy thanks to his magic serum. Unfortunately, things just
don’t work that way, and not just because Captain America is a comic book hero.
No, the problem is that there’s no such thing as a “good” person. Our nature is
not one of goodness, rather we’re born with a nature of sin; and as long as
that nature is within us, we don’t stand a chance of ever being a “good”
person. The good news is, God loved us enough to help us with that. Through the
death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our sin nature can be replaced with
Christ’s nature. In essence, God gives us a little super-holy infusion of our
own through the Holy Spirit to help us achieve what we could never do on our
own. Truth is none of us are qualified to be Captain America because none of us
are good enough, but through Christ, we can be good enough to be the children
of God; and that’s even better than being a super-solider.
