Astro Zombies, Sleeping Bags, The Homeless And You – A Small Way To Be A Big Help

by Yo Snyder

So a few weeks back I was at Astro-Zombies (the local comic
shop that supplies all of our review materials here at The Guide) and I noticed
a flyer. It read “Astro Zombies 3rd Annual Holiday Sleeping Bag
Drive.” I knew about the sleeping bag drive from Christmases past and knew
that Mike, the owner, did this every year. What I didn’t know was why.

I decided to ask about it to see if Static Radio and The Guide could get
involved, and the story he told touched me. Astro Zombies is located in the Nob
Hill area and sees a lot of homeless. A few years ago Mike was working the week
of Christmas and he saw a “regular walker” named Leroy. Mike decided
he was going to take him to eat at a restaurant and get him some real food.
They began talking at the local Einstein’s and Mike asked him what he needed
the most this Christmas since he was living on the streets. Leroy’s reply was
honest and easy: He said it was really cold outside and what he needed most was
a sleeping bag to keep warm. Mike ran out and bought him one on the spot.

As I write this, I see the temperature outside…27 degrees right now–in the
mid-afternoon. What would it be like sleeping outside in the freezing cold with
nothing but a jacket to keep warm? Another thing that gets me is the fact that
Mike is not a Christian. He does not believe Jesus is God or that he needs
Jesus to enter heaven. Yet, he is a man who is doing what we, as Christians,
are called to do. When asked what the greatest commandment was Jesus replied,
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as
yourself.'” (Luke 10:27 NIV). In John 13:34-35, Jesus tells us “A new
command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one
another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one
another.” I write this as a challenge. Let’s show those in our community
who do not have a roof or a bed to sleep in the love of Jesus and meet that
physical need. By doing so, we show the world we are Jesus’ disciples.

So how can we do that? Easy, drop off new adult cold-weather sleeping bags at
Astro-Zombies, 3100 Central Ave. SE. For every sleeping bag you donate, you
will be entered into a drawing to win prizes including gift certificates from
Astro Zombies, Zumiez, Cold Stone Creamery, Square Root Salon, Mask Y Mas, and
more! Winners will be chosen and contacted on December 24. You know, we love
comic books and movies and video games and all the rest of that stuff here at
The Guide, but when you get right down to it, this is a ministry, and ministry
is all about people. So help us help the people in need in our community. And
when you drop off those sleeping bags, be sure to thank Mike and the guys at
Astro Zombies for their initiative to help those in need, and for supporting a
ministry like The Guide.
